This project involved the new construction of a single-story, 2400 sqft home on a tear-down lot in a historic neighborhood. My initial role was to translate the lead architect's elevations and floor plans into a detailed SketchUp model.
A significant part of my work focused on the interior design elements, specifically refining the cabinetry and lighting. I collaborated closely with the client and the lead interior designer, going through numerous iterations to achieve the desired storage solutions. Each version of the cabinet design was delivered to the client for approval and markup, ensuring their vision was met.
The process faced a major early interruption during the permit approval phase, which required a reduction in the home's overall footprint and changes to the wall height. I promptly updated the SketchUp model to reflect these structural changes and continued the iterative design process for the cabinetry and lighting. The client greatly valued the 3D line drawings, which helped them visualize how their amendments affected the changing spaces.
A key design consideration was the integration of a concealed mail drop box within the office's built-in cabinetry, requiring it to connect to the home's exterior near the main entrance. Successfully addressing this specific requirement demanded a highly collaborative and iterative design process involving the contractor, architect, and cabinet maker.
